One Minute at a Time...

If I just did everything that takes one minute, everyday…

Hi, everybody,

I really do not enjoy maintaining a clean home.  I know, I know.  I am supposed to take pride in having a clean and welcoming home.  In addition, I do, I really do…when it is clean.  Sometimes it is getting the home to that clean state, day after day, that gets me down.

I hear you, you working full-time moms with small children.  You are doing most of the cooking, child minding, and cleaning in the home.  Thinking about all you do leaves me exhausted.  What you would not give for just one quiet hour where you could do anything you want.  Not to mention being able to catch up on enough sleep or being able to rest without keeping one eye open.

Hubby and I feel for you empty nesters, with the children long gone.  Both of you still working, Both still making the home a home, and trying to find the way back to being a couple.

Fate throws you a curve and a grown child moves back in, bringing more with him.  New adjustments all around.  Then they are gone and both of you are alone, learning once again to be a couple.

Finally, one of you retires, and the household work is unequal.  Learning to set new expectations this time is more challenging.  Then both of you are retired…you are feeling your way into very unfamiliar dynamics.  Your home should be clean.  you are home all day, but…it is not.  What is holding you back?

Yes, my ah, ha moment, don’t know what yours will be,  maintaining the status quo just doesn’t have the wow factor of cleaning/decluttering a big mess and getting praise and appreciation for a job well done.

So make a list of all the one minute or less tasks that make your house a home.
Add new ones as you find them or they become necessary to your home’s health.

I am finding that

Household Daily Maintenance = Multiple Instances of One Minute Tasks

Here’s a challenge, today and going forward, try to do all one minute or less tasks immediately.
See what difference it will make in making your house a home.

I will start

Labels & Organizing

Labels-How can they be used in organizing?

I have used a label maker for years.  Started with using them in the office for file folders and graduated to using it in the home for different items.  There are multitudes of labels available.  Just visit an office supply or craft store and check them out.

What type of labels do you have and how do you use them?

□ Toys—a picture and word on card
Attach to clear toy container or basket
□ Spices
□ Bulk pantry items
□ Storage boxes
□ Drawer tops
□ Paper files
□ Light switches
□ Parts drawers in garage or workshop
□ Craft supplies
□ Hobby supplies
□ Freezer items
□ Circuit breakers
□ Closet organizational baskets

□ Colored tape on metric & US tools
□ Chalkboard paint on glass, metal, wood
□ Chalkboard sticky labels
□ Printable magnetic labels
□ Self-stick vinyl printed labels
□ Shipping labels
□ Emergency labels
□ Tie-on labels
□ Luggage labels
□ Waterproof markers
□ Index Cards numbering storage bins-

If I really don't want to clean, my house is cleaner if I

[Some days I just don’t feel like cleaning or tidying up. However, here are a few things that make me feel that my house is cleaner]

□ Make the bed
□ Close the curtains over the closet doors and windows
□ Remove all dishes in living room
□ Place all trash in trash cans in each room
□ Wash all dirty dishes or place them into the dishwasher
□ Wipe the kitchen counter, stove, and sink clean
□ Hang on towel rack or
place into the hamper all used bathroom towels
□ Place dirty clothing in clothes hamper
□ Put clean clothing in proper destination
□ Sweep floors, vacuum rugs

It really does not matter what else needs doing, if I have done most of the above things, I will not beat myself up on what still needs to be done.

What’s the best thing you can do for/in your home that makes you feel good when you are not really cleaning it?

Helping Protect Your Hands and Arms from Cuts and Burns

Hand and Arm Protection for the Kitchen
I used to get burned baking cookies.  I have faint burn scars on my forearms to be exact.  Therefore, along with the heat resistant sleeve I now use potholders and a wooden rack puller.

I keep a small bottle of aloe vera juice (yes, the kind you drink) in the fridge for burns, skin, wind, sun, and using it works for all three.

Are you scared of getting cut prepping food?  Try out the cut-resistant Kevlar glove.  You could take a preparing vegetables and fruits cutting class.  YouTube has all kinds of videos on prepping if you hunt for them.  I took an on-site knife cutting class at our local community college years ago.

Empty Boxes in Storage

I don't know about you, but we always keep the boxes our electronics and small boxes our appliances  come in, out in (ahem) my storage building. You know, those pesky boxes that you must place your defective product into whenever you return it. They get dusty, dirty, the glue draws bugs. Ugh!

Well yesterday, I got hubby to help get them out of my building. Climbed a ladder and pulled those suckers out of the loft. Freed up about a 5' x 4' x 3' space. Then we took the boxes to our outdoor pickup garbage cans. Filled one extra large trash can with foam inserts that are not recyclable and cut the boxes  with a case cutter to fit into the extra large recycle trash can.

By the time we completed this task I was dusty, irritable, and longed for a shower.

Next time I save a box, I'm going to post a note on my bulletin board with the removal date for the box. A calendar note post would work too. Maybe both. Most returns have a 90 day limit. If one is lucky the limit might be a year. Just in case, I photo copy the receipt (it fades) and file with proof of purchase/warranty paperwork.

As for the box, I'll use a marker and write on it "remove after month/day/year."

Yes!!! I have a plan!

Spring Fever Yet?

During the past week or so of cold rain, I've been feeling the need for spring. I'm tired of the rain.

Called my youngest sister and issued a challenge--you clean one bathroom this week, I'll clean mine and we'll get together next week to clean/declutter your second bathroom.
Game on!

So, I went through the stuff in my bathroom, trashed the out-of date stuff, gathered the new I- won't- use stuff into a give away container, and cleaned the windows, mirrors, sink, shelves, toilet.
Still have the floor and baseboard to go.

Sis said she'd cleaned out mom's house so repair could begin but hadn't done anything on either of her bathrooms yet. Game is still on.

Don't tell her I said it, but she's winning even without cleaning her bathrooms.

I still have a play date at her house for the bathrooms.

Sometimes, having a challenge, however small, can give you lift when you rise to the challenge.

Can't wait for Spring!

"There are so many ways to stay active while retired.  Explore new hobbies, clubs, and more to find your new favorite things to do while retired and bored.

By: Kaylee Pope, Editor, CheapThriftyLiving."

The list is great, everyone should be able to find inspiration.

Hubby retired 10 years ago. I  retired at the end of 2019 and am looking forward to getting my house in order.

Started a blog, wrote an ebook, took a college class during the last few years.

Looking forward to being more active in church, American Legion Aux.', and 2 different motorcycle groups.

Want to promote blog through public speaking-- this is in addition to decluttering, down-sizing possessions, staging, and finally spending more time cooking, reading, and spending quality time with hubby.
